SC Bern versus Red Bull Munich is the only matchup in this year’s Round of 16 that features two reigning league champions going head-to-head. Both teams are currently battling right near the top of the Swiss National League and DEL at the moment, as well.
Last season, SC Bern made it to the Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals for the first time. From there, they had a great season, winning their second straight Swiss title. Heading into the break, they have a five-point lead atop the standings right now, winning both games this past weekend. In the CHL they finished second in a bizarre Group F, winning once and losing once against all three opponents.
In goal for Bern, it’s once again Leonardo Genoni, who has played in all but one game in the CHL and NL combined. Offensively, Andrew Ebbett and defenceman Maxim Noreau each had seven points in the CHL group stage, while Ebbett has 23 points in 16 domestic games, which leads the whole league.
“We look forward to playing in Bern,” said Munich head coach Don Jackson. “I’m sure they’re looking for some revenge after we beat them in the pre-season. We played pretty well that game so we’re looking forward to the game and getting some of our guys back from injuries.”
Like Bern, the Red Bulls are also two-time reigning champions in Germany. They are appearing in the CHL Round of 16 for the first time and looking to become the first German team to make the Quarter-Finals. They were leading the DEL standings this season but have dipped to second, overtaken by the Nuremberg Ice Tigers. They were very impressive in the CHL group stage, topping a group that included Brynäs IF and IFK Helsinki.
In goal, Danny Aus den Birken and David Leggio have split the duties, with Aus den Birken getting slightly more minutes in both competitions. Defenceman Konrad Abeltshauser is the team’s top scorer in the CHL with five points, while Keith Aucoin’s 27 points in 18 games not only leads Munich domestically but the whole DEL by a good margin.
