- Belfast controlled first two periods
- Třinec came alive in the third
- Mark Cooper scored the winning shootout goal
The Belfast Giants welcomed Czech Extraliga champions Oceláři Třinec for their second duel after a 4-0 shutout win by Třinec last time around.
This time, Belfast got straight to work, with Will Cullen cracking open the scoreboard with a wrist shot at the blue line, giving the home team a 1-0 lead at the nine minute mark.
A few minutes later, Jan Zahradníček was sent to the box for hooking, but the home team were unable to add to their advantage, as the opening period came to a close with a 1-0 lead for Belfast.
Coming into the second stanza, Třinec, looking to get the equaliser, upped the ante, as the Giants found themselves heading to the box for the first time on a high sticking call on Colby McAuley, followed by a face-off penalty for Ben Lake, giving Třinec a five-on-three opportunity, but they failed to get something going.
Belfast, back on the powerplay courtesy of Jan Zahradníček’s hooking call, failed to find the back of the net for the second time on the man-advantage. The Northern Irish club would get their third chance though with a high-sticking call on Petr Vrána which they eventually capitalised on as Scott Conway scored the first powerplay goal of the game at 29:45.
Just when it looked like Belfast had silenced Třinec, Petr Vrana put them on the board at the fifty minute mark with the assist by Miloš Roman. Picking up on that momentum, Tomáš Marcinko came in with the equaliser, making it a 2-2 game with fifty-seven minutes on the clock.
Belfast's Sam Ruopp's penalty for checking on the head or neck looked as if it would settle the score, but Třinec couldn't find an opening, bringing the game into overtime.
After an unbelievable shootout, the game was decided in the tenth round, giving Belfast their first CHL win of the season at the hands of Mark Cooper!
