- SCORELESS BUT EVEN FIRST PERIOD
- PETAN SCORED THE GAME'S ONLY GOAL IN THE SECOND PERIOD
- SHUTOUT FOR ROY, WHO STOPPED ALL 25 ATTEMPTS
With both sides bowing out of the Champions Hockey League 2022/23 Playoffs, Fehérvár AV19 and GKS Katowice had no pressure, other than the need to win bragging rights, and with the first game going the way of the Hungarians this would be Katowice's last chance for revenge.
The first stanza was a goalless affair despite both sides having their fair share of chances. Katowice got their first powerplay of the game off a tripping call on Hungarian native Istvan Bartalis, but couldn't find any open lanes towards Fehérvár netminder Olivier Roy.
Things heated up after a Katowice rush ended in a small pile-up in the crease of Roy, but the hosts responded quicky with a handful of close-range shots on netminder Maciej Miarka. A spin-around move from American forward Patrick Newell in the dying seconds of the period was Fehérvár's best chance so far, but Miarka was on point.
Roy shone in the second, coming up with a pair of huge saves early to deny the offensive advances of the Poles, while Miarka was kept equally busy. With the halfway mark of the game passed, Katowice would get another four minutes of well-controlled man-advantage play, but couldn't find their finishing touch, meanwhile, Roy was on fire.
With the penalty kill dusted, Fehérvár's Alexander Petan caught a break, pulling the puck to his backhand to roof goal number one, and give his team the 1-0 lead before the period intermission.
The Poles upped their forechecking in the third, pressuring the hosts to falter, but Fehérvár managed a tight defensive game, and anything that seeped through was smothered by Roy.
Katowice secured a vital chance to level the game with powerplay number three, but were denied yet again. With time running short, the Polish side pulled their goalie with less than 30 seconds left on the clock, but couldn't find the elusive equaliser before the sound of the final horn. The game would end 1-0 in favour of the home side.
