- Zug remain undefeated
- Ljubljana fail to snag a win
- Peter Cehlárik nets two for Zug
EV Zug hosted Olimpija Ljubljana for their second duel and the final match of the Group Stage of the 2022/23 CHL season. With just under three minutes on the clock, Luka Kalan’s hooking call gave Zug an easy opportunity to get something going, which is exactly what Peter Cehlárik managed to do, scoring the first goal on the man advantage. Just two minutes later, Dario Simion took the momentum a bit further, giving Zug a 2-0 lead early in the opening period. The Slovenian newcomers would struggle for the remainder of the first period, trailing behind Zug on shots taken 26-9.
The second stanza also started off well for the Swiss powerhouse, with the second powerplay goal caputured by Brian O’Neill after Ljubljana’s Aljoša Crnović was called for high-sticking.
Just when it started looking pretty bleak for Ljubljana, Tadej Čimžar snatched the Slovenian's first goal, with the assist by Žiga Pance. In response, Peter Cehlárik netted his second goal of the match at the 30:39 mark, giving Zug a comfortable 4-1 lead at the close of the middle frame.
The final period didn't bring much substantive action until a late grab by Joseph Yasuo Garreffa gave Ljubljana their second goal, making things a lot more interesting in the final frame.
As the match was coming to a close, Carl Klingberg putted one into the net, giving the Swiss powerhouse a solid 5-2 win as the Group Stage games concluded!
