- SCORELESS FIRST PERIOD
- THREE GOALS IN THE SECOND PERIOD, FRÖLUNDA NET TWO
- FRÖLUNDA WIN ON PENALTY SHOTS
Frölunda Gothenburg came back strong after losing the First Game clash in the Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals. The hosts equalised with Skellefteå AIK to take the game to OT and win on penalty shots.
No time was being wasted for Frölunda who blew out of the gates, dominating puck possession in the opening minutes of the first period. Netminder Linus Söderström looked steady, collecting a handful of shots rifled in early.
The duo of Oscar Möller and Rikard Hugg showed promising moments of offence for the team in black and yellow. A huge hit dished from Skellefteå's Petter Granberg on Petteri Lindbohm had the crowd roaring, but the stanza was otherwise tame in terms of physicality.
A slashing call on Albin Sundsvik gave the festive red and green jerseys of Frölunda their first man-advantage of the night, but their rivals had other ideas, sneaking in a couple of short-handed chances on Frölunda's netminder Lars Johansson.
Skellefteå forward Andreas Wingerli had a golden opportunity off a pick-pocket on top scorer Ryan Lasch on the blueline of Frölunda's defensive zone. That was followed up by a second attempt by Elias Stenman, who was denied again by the pads of Johansson.
Following a scoreless first period, the team from Gothenburg had the pedal down, holding the play in Skellefteå's zone for an extended shift. Frölunda got their second powerplay of the night thanks to a holding call on Jonathan Jonsson, and the hosts made it count.
Frölunda defenceman Andreas Borgman netted his first goal of the season ripping a wrist shot from the blue line and into the back of the net to level the series 1-1.
Skellefteå got their first powerplay after Joel Lundqvist was sent to the bin. Max Lindholm sent a bullet into the glove of Johansson, and moments later Andreas Wingerli inflicted the real damage, blasting a one-timer off a pass from Pär Lindholm who was stationed on the goal line.
A powerplay goal from Frölunda's Jacob Nilsson at 30:57 tied the game 2-2. A fourth powerplay for the hosts would follow but they weren't able to extend the lead before the tables were turned with Skellefteå gaining an unproductive 5-3. Officials had their hands full with tensions rising on the ice, but the final result would be a powerplay to Frölunda as the teams wrapped up the period.
With a tied aggregate score going into the third period, and even-strength play resuming Skellefteå's Måns Forsfjäll clinched the lead for his side at 41:04. His wrist shot deflected off the leg of a defensive player and into the back of the net to make it 3-2. Not to be outdone, Frölunda tied the game for a third time! This time from Filip Johansson strike at 48:20.
With less than five minutes remaining, forward Nicklas Lasu was unlucky not to score after he collected a stretch pass and cut into the crease of Söderström.
In spectactular fashion it would take 10 minutes of overtime and penalty shots to settle the battle, but goals from veteran players Ryan Lasch and Max Friberg would secure Frölunda's entry into yet another CHL Semi-Final and bring Skellefteå's phenomenal run of wins to an end.
