- Munich outshot Tappara 47-37
- Both failed to capitalise on powerplays
- Niko Ojamäki scored the game-winning shootout goal
Game Day 5 brought Group C’s Red Bull Munich home to host Tappara Tampere. Both teams met in last year’s CHL Semi-Finals when Tappara took Munich out with a 3-0 win. Needless to say, Munich have been playing excellent hockey and were itching for a different ending this time around as they led in shots on goal during the opening periods.
At the 14:49 minute mark, Joni Tuulola got the first one on the board off a rebound with the assist by Jori Lehterä, giving Tappara the lead. Off the turnover, Munich’s Andreas Eder responded by scoring the equaliser, heating things up in the late stage of the first frame.
The second period saw both teams fight for the lead, this time with Tappara upping the ante on shots taken, giving Munich net minder Mathias Niederberger a run for his money.
With some impressive tic-tack-toe passing, Munich’s Julian Lutz gave the home team their first lead of the night, assisted by Ben Smith and Justin Schütz. Just two minutes later, Lutz also got the first penalty call of the game, giving Tappara a golden chance to tie it up, but ti no such luck, as the second frame came to a close with a 2-1 lead for the Germans.
Straight off the top of the final frame, Munich’s Ben Street snatched a two-goal lead for the home team. Tappara responded shortly after with Patrik Virta closing the gap 3-2.
Making things even more interesting, Jere Henriksson came in swiftly to tie the game 3-3 at 47:36.
And that was it for regulation, as overtime started with some 4-on-3 play followed by 4-on-4 and then finally 3-on-3, yet neither team were able to get anything going, resulting in a penalty shootout.
At the 65:00 minute mark, Niko Ojamäki snatched the game-winning shootout goal giving Tappara a 4-3 win against Munich and the extra point from the game.
