- Ben Street: hattrick for Munich
- Austin Orgeta: OT-winning goal
- Gap widens in Group C
Austin Ortega scored on a breakaway in overtime as Red Bull Munich overcame a 4-2 deficit after two periods to defeat the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers 5-4. Ben Street scored Munich's first three goals of the game.
While the Lakers got their first point, they had three in their grasp and they now face a monumental task, trailing Munich by seven points with just three games to play.
The teams started the game the same way they ended it - at a torrid pace - exchanging goals in the first four minutes. Munich struck first off the rush led by Frederik Tiffels, with Melvin Nyffeler stopping the first shot from Andreas Eder but Street put in the rebound. Rapperswil answered when Roman Červenka sprung Tyler Moy free on a breakaway. Despite being hooked from behind, Moy beat Mathias Niederberger over the glove.
Munich went zero for their first five powerplay attempts in the CHL but scored on their first chance of this game. At 9:10, Street scored his second, putting a nice re-direction on Ben Smith’s shot.
Rapperswil struck three times in a span of 6:32 in the second period to turn a one-goal deficit into a two-goal lead. Just past the game’s midpoint, Jeremy Wick took a breakaway pass and then scored on a forehand deke. Then three minutes later they took the lead on a play where Niederberger was bumped but then recovered and Yannick-Lennart Albrecht scored. The play was reviewed for goaltender interference but the goal stood.
With 3:24 to go in the middle frame, Červenka forced a turnover in the neutral zone, then drove to the Munich net and scored with a shot in close over Niederberger’s blocker.
After being outshot 25-14 over the first 40 minutes, Munich came out storming to start the third period. They very nearly scored on the opening shift but missed. But at 42:18 Street completed his hattrick from in front of the net on a one-timer after Tiffels fed him from behind the goal.
Just over three minutes later it was tied when Munich converted on the power play for the second time. Chris DeSousa drove to the net and his shot was stopped, but Zachary Redmond scored on the rebound.
Rapperswil then got their only two powerplays of the game and Munich got their fourth, but despite that there was no more scoring for the rest of regulation time. There were great chances at either end during 3-on-3 overtime, most notably Červenka hitting the goalpost. But with time winding down in the extra period, Ryan McKiernan cleared the puck from deep in his own end and Ortega caught up to it before beating Nyffeler with a backhand deke.
