- Olimpija Ljubljana outshot 17-39
- Luis Schinko picks up three points
Wolfsburg secured three goals in the first period, and never lost the lead, securing their first win of the season 7-2 against visiting side Olimpija Ljubljana.
Darren Archibald got the Grizzlys Wolfsburg off to a great start 1:07 into the period. His shot sailed high over the shoulder of Slovenian netminder Žan Us to put the German's up 1-0. Olimpija Ljubljana weren't without chances, but struggled to find their finishing touch on Wolfsburg netminder Dustin Strahlmeier.
Top scorer Luis Schinko made it 2-0 for Wolfsburg, pulling a bold wrap-around that saw the puck rifled to the top right-hand corner of the net. The hosts had a chance to extend the lead with a duo of man-advantage minutes late in the first, but weren't able to capitalise.
With even-strength play resuming the German side netted goal three of the night, this time a wristshot from Canadian forward Spencer Machacek who inflicted the damage moments before the period intermission.
With a three goal deficit to claw back from, Ljubljana were under pressure, and a third penalty didn't help their cause. Wolfsburg littered the net with shots forcing Us to come up with big saves to stay in the game. Lucky to escape unscathed, Rok Kapel got the Slovenains back in the game thanks to a neat pass from teammate Žiga Pance making it 3-1.
The good news was shortlived for Ljubljana after Defenceman Aljoša Crnović fumbled with the puck on a breakout leading to an unfortunate turnover. The goal credited to Dustin Jeffrey put the hosts up 4-1. Marc-Oliver Vallarand had a chance to cut the lead in half but his attempt was swallowed up by Strahlmeier.
Wolfsburg pulled ahead further courtesy of a backhand goal from Schinko, his second goal of the night, making it 5-1. A sixth goal would come, this time off the skate of Nolan Zajac at 45:20. Things went from bad to worse for Olimpija who suffered a short-handed goal against. The goal from Dominik Bittner saw Us switched up for Anthony Morrone.
With seven minutes left, and an impossible task ahead, the Slovenians managed to get a second past Strahlmier who was having a sensational game. A slapshot of the stick of Gregor Koblar would lessen the deficit to five goals, but it wasn't enough. The final horn sounded 7-2 in favour of Wolfsburg.
