- Växjö keep winning streak alive
- Noah Östlund scored two goals
- Växjö outshot Ingolstadt 66-46
On Game Day 5 of the Champions Hockey League, ERC Ingolstadt welcomed Swedes the Växjö Lakers to the Saturn Arena. The home team had a lot more at stake tonight, especially considering the Swedes had already secured a spot in the 2023/24 Playoffs in the September games. With that being said, Växjö didn’t back down and their fighting spirit led them to yet another victory - their fifth of the season.
Early in the opening period, the first goal of the game, a powerplay tally, set the tone for the entire game. Ingolstadt's Charles Bertrand found himself in the penalty box for a 2-minute penalty for lifting his stick a bit too high and Växjö seized the opportunity with the extra man on the ice, exerting intense pressure that the home team could not endure. In a situation where two Växjö players were covered by a single defender, Noah Östlund found the space to break the deadlock.
The second period witnessed three changes on the scoreboard as the visiting team notched two goals, solidifying their lead at 3-0. The first goal came early in the period at even strength and prompted a goaltender change for the home side.
The second goal took advantage of a powerplay that resulted from a to-many-men penalty call. Ingolstadt then managed to narrow the gap slightly by reducing the difference to two goals, but tensions escalated not long after, with a brawl erupting that led to roughing penalties being handed out on both sides.
At 46:30, Travis St. Denis received a five-minute slew-footing penalty for injuring Växjö’s Carlsson, who then had to head to the locker room earlier than planned.
The away team showcased their powerplay effectiveness once more by adding two additional goals to their tally. At 54:47, Ingolstadt managed to reduce the deficit, but unfortunately for them, it was the last goal of the night, resulting in a final score of 5-2 in favour of the Lakers.
