- Genève secure a spot in the Quarter-Finals
- Patrick Hager scores only goal for Munich
- Genève scored two goals in the third period
Genève-Servette clashed with Red Bull Munich in front of their home crowd in Switzerland for the Return Game of their Round of 16 match-up.
The Swiss entered the match trailing, having lost 3-2 last week in Munich. In contrast, the Bavarians had a nice headstart that they were eager to maintain. With both teams ready for battle, the opening face-off marked the beginning of the second and final showdown for a spot in the Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals.
The visitors took control of the first period as they bombarded Genève’s goaltender with shot after shot. However, Munich's Niederberger also faced a proper peppering, but both of them showcased their top-level goaltender qualities, as reflected by the nearly unchanged scoreboard. The lone goal of the period came with just 11 seconds remaining, as Munich’s Hager deflected MacWilliam’s shot into the net, securing him his second goal of the season and giving the visitors a two-goal buffer.
Both teams continued in their shooting frenzy, but Munich also accumulated plenty of penalties, which proved lethal for them. Genève finally got into the game as they lit the lamp after many superb chances. The successful shot sneaked into the goal through the legs of a Munich defenceman, courtesy of Teemu Hartikainen. The game was back to a mere one-goal lead on aggregate.
The final period belonged to Genève as they continuously tested Niederberger throughout the last 20 minutes. He held his ground for a while, but eventually conceded a goal, levelling the game on aggregate, and then another, propelling Genève into the lead at 50:57.
Munich found themselves playing catch-up for the first time in their two encounters. They fought back hard, but Genève had a strong grip on their lead. As the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard displayed 3-1 in favour of Genève, securing a 5-4 aggregate victory for the Swiss team and a place in the next round of the 2023/23 CHL Playoffs.
