- Třinec's Playoff hopes still alive
- Ondřej Kacetl stopped 37/39 shots in 2023/24 debut
- Stavanger's mistakes on the special teams were costly
A flurry of missed chances saw the home team fall short as the Stavanger Oilers dropped their fifth fixture to Oceláři Třinec by a 4-2 final, effectively ending their bid for a postseason appearance while the Czechs still have a chance to qualify for the Round of 16.
The visitors wasted no time as this Game Day 5 contest in Norway got underway, as they found the net 53 seconds in. The puck squirted free following a scramble in the faceoff dot and found its way to Marko Dańo who put it past Henrik Holm to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Opportunities continued to manifest for Třinec as they extended their lead late in the period when Daniel Voženílek banged home a rebound after Holm made the initial save off a shot attempt from Richard Pánik.
After 20 minutes, it was the visitors taking advantage of their chances to produce a two-goal lead which they carried into the second period despite trailing in shots 12-10.
Period number two saw a handful of Stavanger turnovers lead to a handful of quality scoring chances for their challengers, but Holm protected the cage in fine fashion, turning away all 12 shots from the Czech side. In the opposing net, Ondřej Kacetl did his part in keeping the hosts off the scoreboard for a second straight period to maintain Třinec's advantage with one period left to play.
In the third, it was the Czechs lighting the lamp for a third time when Martin Marinčin deflected a shot from the point past the Norwegian netminder to go up 3-0. Adam Smith wristed one from the blueline with Marinčin in perfect position to get a piece of it as it took an unlucky bounce off of a Stavanger defenceman and into the back of the net.
Stavanger did their best to claw their way back into the contest and that started with Mathias Trettenes converting on a penalty shot while the hosts were shorthanded. Then, Patrick Ulriksen halved the deficit off a tip in front that found its way past Kacetl with a little less than five minutes to play in regulation.
But Třinec got the one they needed to seal their victory thanks to Martin Růžička's first of the tournament to make it 4-2. Despite their strong play in the later stages of the game, Stavanger came up short of a comeback and will now play their sixth match-up for pride.
