- Munich's powerplay continues to produce
- Innsbruck drop their second contest
- Ben Smith secured his first hattrick, scored all three on the powerplay
Ben Smith produced a hattrick as Red Bull Munich steamrolled HC Innsbruck to the tune of a 9-2 win to increase their total points to ten while Innsbruck sit with six points through four games.
Konrad Abeltshauser broke the ice for the home side 4:37 into the contest when he skated down the slot and picked his shot low glove side to beat Evan Buitenhuis.
But then Lukas Bär got Innsbruck on the board with his team down a man as he slid home a live puck that had made its way behind Daniel Allavena. The puck lay just behind the netminder as play never stopped and Bär took the opportunity to put it home.
Munich would get another opportunity on the powerplay a few minutes later where they were able to convert with Smith's first tally. Eight minutes later, Trevor Parkes extended the Germans' lead when he slid a backhander through the Innsbruck netminder.
The hosts continued their onslaught in the second with two tallies a minute apart.
Austin Ortega started things off by exposing Buitenhuis' five-hole once again and then Andrew MacWilliam netted his first of the Regular Season with a wrister from the far circle.
Near the halfway mark, Corey Mackin succeeded in cutting the deficit to three goals when his shot went off the stick of a Munich player and over the glove of Allavena.
Any momentum Innsbruck had, though, quickly vanished when Smith stuffed home his second of the afternoon on the powerplay a minute later.
Munich continued to shell their hosts with shots in the third with Smith scoring his third on the powerplay to secure the hattrick and bring the Germans' goal total to seven.
Innsbruck wouldn't do themselves any favours taking another penalty late in the period that resulted in Ortega notching his second. Parkes would make it nine moments later as Munich were able to find the net three times in each period to win back-to-back matches in front of their home crowd.
