- Salzburg fail to reach the Playoffs for the first time in their CHL tenure
- Five different players scored for Lahti
- The Finns went 1-for-3 on the powerplay
The Lahti Pelicans' high-powered offence was on full display as they collected their fourth win - and a place in the Playoffs - in their 5-1 decision over Red Bull Salzburg.
A late-period deflection out in front finally broke the ice as Lahti engineered the game's first goal when the initial point-shot from Onni Käyhkö found the stick of Lars Bryggman who tipped it past Salzburg's David Kickert to open the scoring in the first.
The Finns almost doubled their lead seconds later but Kickert managed to stave off any further damage as both clubs headed to the locker rooms with the visitors up by one.
Play got underway in the second with Lahti converting on a chance just 24 seconds in when Kasper Puutio put one past Kickert far side to extend their lead to 2-0.
Back-and-forth hockey ensued with both clubs applying pressure in the offensive zone until Salzburg answered back at 31:40 when Devin Steffler beat Jussi Olkinuora from the right circle. Steffler cruised down the far side where he received a cross-ice feed from Tim Luca Harnisch which he sent towards the net.
Late in the period, however, it would be the Finns with their third of the night off the stick of Elias Vilen. Vilen chased the puck into the offensize zone before skating in on a partial breakaway where he slid home a backhander to make it 3-1.
Then in the third, a failed clearing attempt on the penalty kill gave the puck to Anton Mylläri who fed it to Patrik Carlsson who then skated into the far circle where he faked a one-timer, corralled the puck and whistled it past Kickert for his second of the season and Lahti's sixth powerplay goal.
The final tally came from Konsta Hirvonen with less than two minutes to go as the visitors would take this one against an Austrian side that never managed to contain the CHL's sixth-ranked team in Goals For in Lahti.
