- Huge game from Ingolstadt's Wojciech Stachowiak with two goals
- Ingolstadt dominate the stats with 39-19 face-off wins
Patinoire Nathalie Péchalat was abuzz with the excitement of the Champions Hockey League, Game Day 1 action, and ERC Ingolstadt rose to the occasion, winning their first game on the road 5-3. Daniel Pietta secured the game-winner while Devin Williams made 12 saves to secure the win for his side.
An early penalty called on Casey Bailey for holding gave the hosts their first powerplay of the night, and Latvian forward Rolands Vigners wasted no time rocketing a one-timer past German netminder Williams at 5:43 to give the French side a 1-0 lead.
Minutes later, a backhander goal by Wojciech Stachowiak found its way past netminder Matija Pintarič to level the game for Ingolstadt. Rouen would have another opportunity to regain the lead with a second powerplay but weren't able to convert. With 19 seconds remaining in the period, Jan Nijenhuis put his team up 2-1 with a nifty dangle and chip up to the top shelf, courtesy of an assist from teammate Pietta.
Despite both teams exchanging offensive rushes, it was a scoreless second period until a duo of penalties reduced the game to a 4-on-4. A second penalty to Ingolstadt gave the host side a vital 5-on-3, and a chance to equalise, which they did. A pass dished from Francis Perron saw Canadian defenceman Sacha Guimond send in a bullet from just inside the blueline, beating Williams a second time. The period would end 2-2, setting the stage for an intense final twenty minutes.
The start of the third period opened with an early powerplay chance for the German visitors, and Wayne Simpson's best attempt strayed just high of the net. Ingolstadt's persistence would pay off at 13:58 after Stachowiak shovelled a pass to Pietta, who was planted on the doorstep of Pintarič.
Play halted momentarily after a collision saw Rouen captain Loic Lamperier escorted off the ice, but no penalties were in order. Seconds into the play resuming, Ingolstadt forward Patrik Virta skated into the slot, shot, and picked up his rebound to extend the lead 4-2. Stachowiak would pick up his second goal of the night, making it 5-2 for the German visitors. Rouen managed a third goal, a beautiful tip from Alexandre Mallet with four seconds to spare but it wouldn't be enough.
With the final buzzer sounding in 5-3 in favor of the visitors, the victory gives Ingolstadt three vital points in the Regular Season Standings.
