- Växjö outshot Rapperswil 58-38
- Dylan McLaughlin scored the OT game-winner
- 6th win in a row for Växjö
The Rapperswil Jona-Lakers visited southern Sweden to face the undefeated Växjö Lakers on Game Day 6 of the Champions Hockey League. The stakes were high for the Swiss team, desperately seeking points to secure a spot in the Playoffs, however, they knew that the home team would be a tough opponent, as they headed into this tie as the strongest team of the season so far.
The away team’s Colin Gerber took it upon himself to seize the lead in the game at 12:18, when he skated in from the left-wing side and took a shot from long range, catching goaltender Adam Åhman by surprise and allowing the easily-catchable shot to find its way into the home team's goal.
Rapperswil furthered their lead early in the second period when Gian-Marco Wetter received a pass from Brett Connolly right in front of an exposed Åhman. Despite his efforts, Åhman was unable to stop the puck from crossing the goal line as the score jumped to 2-0.
The rather cautious attacks from both sides were momentarily disrupted by a brawl at 30:41, resulting in five-minute penalties for players on both teams. Interestingly, this pause seemed to work in favour of the Swedes, as they managed to score two consecutive goals in just three minutes, levelling the playing field at 2-2 with 40 minutes of game time up.
Both teams came into the closing period with a cautious approach that failed to produce any goals, therefore sending the game into overtime. The game-winning goal came from Dylan McLaughlin who skillfully maneuvered past the Rapperswil defense and sent a bullet of a shot straight into the back of the net. This secured Växjö's sixth win of the season, an achievement unneeded, but undoubtedly appreciated.
