- Genève have qualified for their first-ever Semi-Finals appearance
- Växjö battled back in the third with two goals 38 seconds apart
- Jussi Olkinuora won in his debut for the Swiss club
A frantic third period would see Genève-Servette onto their first-ever Champions Hockey League Semi-Finals appearance as the Swiss challengers defeated a Växjö Lakers club that was one of the top teams entering the Quarter-Finals by a 6-4 aggregate final.
Teams traded powerplay opportunities in the first but to no effect, as the sides remained knotted at 0-0 with Genève maintaining their aggregate lead after the first 20 minutes.
The Swiss' Daniel Winnik had the best chance of the opening stanza on a penalty shot, but the veteran skater shot it wide as Genève's Jussi Olkinuora and Växjö's Emil Larmi made seven and 12 saves, respectively.
The hosts got themselves back in the game late in the second period when Ludvig Nilsson deflected the puck past Olkinuora to secure the Swedish side's first of the night and cut into Genève's aggregate lead. Joachim Blichfeld carried the puck down the far wall before firing it at the netminder who gave up a rebound which Blichfeld quickly swatted to Nilsson who got his skate on it as it floated past Olkinuora. The goal would be reviewed to determine if there was a distinct kicking motion, but would stand.
With some ground still to make up, the Swedes continued to apply pressure in the opening minutes of the third, but a blocked shot up high led to a one-touch pass that sprung Sami Vatanen on the breakaway as the defenceman potted his second of the tournament to tie the game at 1 apiece and reclaim a three-goal aggregate lead for the Swiss.
Moments later, a Växjö powerplay would result in a Genève shorthanded tally as the Swiss continued to put the game out of reach for the home side. Sakari Manninen had his own breakaway opportunity as he slid the puck five-hole to extend his club's lead to 2-1 and 6-2 on aggregate.
Växjö, however, continued to battle back and secured their second and third tallies on the same powerplay near the halfway mark of the final stanza.
The first was a tip-in courtesy of Kalle Kossila. Blichfeld found the forward at the top of blue paint as Kossila guided the puck past Olkinuora. The Swedes would go on to generate their third marker of the night 38 seconds later when Robert Rosén made it a 3-2 contest off a redirect down low.
Still trailing by two on aggregate in the closing minutes, the Swedes skated 6-on-5 as they attempted to complete the comeback. But Olkinuora never faltered, denying every chance as the Finnish netminder went on to claim his first victory in a Genève sweater and help extend his side's season.
