- Game went to a 15-round shootout
- Both sides scored goals minutes apart
- Stuart Percy nabbed the game-winning goal
A barn burner in Eastern Czechia ended in a 15-round shootout that saw Stuart Percy play the hero when he wristed the puck far side over the stick of Mathias Niederberger to give Vítkovice Ridera a 4-3 victory over Red Bull Munich.
Vítkovice were on their heels to begin their fourth Champions Hockey League campaign as the DEL national champions were all over the Czech side to begin the contest. Both clubs' powerplays made their debut in the opening stanza, but neither was able to convert leaving a score sheet blank heading into the second period.
Action picked up with the home side breaking through on a Dominik Lakatoš goal just 34 seconds in. The leading scorer let go a wrister from above the circles to open the scoring.
Less than a minute later, the Czechs secured their second tally, this time on the powerplay. Percy wired a rolling puck from the blueline that found its way through traffic and past Niederberger as the hosts secured two goals in less than two minutes.
Munich responded with their own marker eight minutes later when Maximilian Kastner whacked a loose puck home. Kastner was parked in the crease when he pounced on the loose puck and sent it to the back of the cage to give the visitors some life.
Another Munich penalty, however, meant another powerplay for Vítkovice and they used the extra man to their advantage to relcaim their two-goal lead in the dying seconds of the middle frame. Rastislav Dej hammered a one-timer off a slick backhand feed from Lakatoš to end the period with a two-goal cushion for the home side heading into the final 20 minutes.
Momentum shifted in the third as Munich, still trailing by two midway through, closed the gap once again with their own powerplay tally courtesy of Trevor Parkes who registered his first goal of the young season. Three minutes later, Austin Ortega scored the equaliser on a 5-on-3 powerplay goal off a beautiful feed from Chris DeSousa as both clubs traded chances in the closing minutes.
With the two teams still tied after regulation and the extra session, a shootout ensued and after 15 rounds it would be Percy to net the game-winner, giving Vítkovice their first win and a valuable three points.
