- Växjö have advanced to the Quarter-Finals for a third time
- Ingolstadt's inability to convert was costly
- The Germans held the shots advantage 27-20
The Växjö Lakers will be making their third appearance in the Quarter-Finals as the Swedes sailed past ERC Ingolstadt by a 7-4 score on aggregate. They will be returning to this leg of the competition for the first time since the 2017/18 campaign.
Some slick passing led to the tap-in from Kalle Kossila on the powerplay as Växjö took a 1-0 lead and 5-1 advantage on aggregate against Ingolstadt eight minutes into the opening frame. The Swedes set themselves up in the offensive zone where they snapped the puck back and forth with ease before Marcus Sylvegård slid it to the stick of Kossila who put it past Devin Williams.
Ingolstadt would go on to secure one of their own when Maury Edwards redirected a point shot from Philipp Krauß to make it a 5-2 game on aggregate. Krauß corralled the puck at the blue line before wristing it through traffic where Edwards was able to get his stick on it and give the visitors some life.
Then, with 17 seconds remaining in the first, it was Växjö again finding twine. Moments after the powerplay expired, Robert Rosén made a brilliant individual effort in close, backhanding the puck on net and creating a rebound opportunity which Dylan McLaughlin easily deposited into the back of the yawning cage to reclaim the lead and extend their advantage.
Period number two saw a much improved performance from the visitors, with Ingolstadt going on the powerplay twice during the middle frame. But a lack of finish continued to haunt the Germans as they were unable to secure a second tally despite creating several solid opportunities. Brandon Kozun was centimeters away from adding to his side's score but wound up firing it off the near post, and after 40 minutes it was all square in the shots department with 15 attempts apiece.
Ingolstadt would help their cause at a comeback in the opening minutes of the third when Mathew Bodie rifled one top shelf past Adam Åhman to tie the game and close the goal gap to 6-3 aggregate scoring. Three minutes later, Krauß would secure his club's third of the night after receiving a lead pass from Andrew Rowe and zipping it by the Swedish netminder.
Still trailing by two late in the period, the Germans opted to pull their netminder but Växjö managed to stave off their push and would eventually seal the game with an empty-netter from Ludvig Nilsson. With that, a tightly contested third came to a disappointing end for an Ingolstadt team that had their chances throughout but were unable to convert as the Swedes will move on.
