- Frölunda will make their sixth CHL Final appearance
- Brynäs' offence had better pace but a lack of defence was costly
- Isac Heens scored both for the home team
It was a battle between the two Swedish clubs, but ultimately, it was Frölunda Gothenburg coming away with a 4-2 aggregate win over Brynäs IF to secure their sixth Champions Hockey League Final qualification. The club will now face off against fellow Swedish challengers Luleå Hockey in the competition's all-or-nothing round to determine the new European Club Champions.
Brynäs' Johannes Kinnvall slammed in a cross-crease pass just as the powerplay expired to halve the deficit to one goal on aggregate just three and a half minutes into the contest. Kieffer Bellows barreled his way down the far wing before fluttering a backhand pass that kissed the top of the crease and found the stick of Kinnvall, who put it home for his third of the tournament.
The hosts, however, reclaimed their two-goal advantage when Isac Heens buried a tape-to-tape feed from Theodor Niederbach. Niederbach shrugged off a defender behind the net to gain some separation and then found an open Heens gliding through the slot, who then rifled it past Damian Clara to make it 3-1 on aggregate scoring.
First period scoring concluded with a backhander courtesy of Johan Larsson, who shoveled the puck past a sprawling Lars Johansson to give his side their second of the night and close the gap to within one once again.
In the second, it was Heens playing spoiler once again as he provided another cushion for his cohorts in the form of a clean rebound sweep on the doorstep. The forward was in the right place at the right time to easily deposit the puck after Clara made the initial save with the right pad.
The visitors made the move to pull their goaltender in the dying minutes of the third in an effort to equalise, but Frölunda did well to frustrate their opponents' chances and hold on to the lead and gain qualification to the Final.
