- All the action came in a five goal third period
- Reto Berra stops 29 for Fribourg
- Munich move on to face Lukko Rauma
Former Champions Hockey League finalists Red Bull Munich will continue on their journey towards another final, as they advance to the Quarter-Finals, beating Fribourg-Gottéron in the Round of 16.
Munich entered the contest two goals to the good, following the first game in Switzerland last week, and as the tie moved to home ice, it was a big third period that sorted who advanced to the next round.
Both teams had good looks at the net early on, with Fribourg looking to pepper shots on net as often as they could, but it would be Trevor Parkes of Munich with the best chance of the opening 10 minutes. The former CHL MVP danced through, pulled the puck to his backhand, but couldn't direct it towards net as it sailed wide of Reto Bera, who was scrambling to get across to make the stop, but ultimately didn't need to.
Momentum seemed to swing towards Friboug who found themselves on on a two-man advantage with a five on three powerplay, but defensively Danny aus den Birken stood tall in net for Munich, while his defenseman sacrificed their bodies to block shots, succesfully killing almost 90 seconds of being down two players.
It was a fairly even first period that went by in a flash, both sides ending the first 20 minutes having found 11 shots on target each, but unable to solve the goalies to keep it scoreless on the night, but Munich ahead 4-2 on aggregate.
Again, neither side could beat the other's netminder, but this time it was more traffic in the way of Munich, and for the second time it was Trevor Parkes with a chance to open the scoring. A long stretch pass sprung him loose, and he tried going to his backhand, but Fribourg netminder Reto Bera couldn't have timed his poke check any better, denying Parkes, and keeping it scoreless on the evening midway through the game.
Fribourg ran into a lot of penalty trouble shortly after, but with good positioning, solid goaltending and a broken stick by Munich, they managed to hold off five straight minutes of penalty killing, which sent the game into the third period still with no score on the night, and Fribourg still trailing by two.
With 20 minutes to save their CHL season, Fribourg finally got on the board early in the third. Chris Didomenico with a brilliant deflection to find the back of the net as Fribourg took the lead on the night, and pulled it back to a one goal deficit overall.
The dream start to the period continued, just over a minute later and the contest was tied up overall. Samuel Walser caught aus den Birken off guard with a sneaky shot, putting it over the shoulder, and that put Fribourg ahead by two, tying things up four a piece overall, so we had a straight shootout for the rest of regulation.
After twice being denied in the first and second period, first by missing the net, then a poke check, Trevor Parkes came through again, and again tried that backhand move, but this time he wouldn't be denied, getting enough purchase on the shot to beat Bera, and retake the lead for Munich, with the third goal in less than five minutes in the third period.
Zachary Redmond would respond again for Munich to once again make it a two goal cushion for Munich midway through the period, and with the hosts then holding strong until the end, an empty net goal from Philip Gogulla with just seconds remaining, sealing their passage through to the next round where they'll face Lukko Rauma.
