- Bern finish up length road trip with second win against Cardiff to top Group G
- Devils earn their first points of the campaign after forcing overtime
- The two sides meet again next weekend in Bern
SC Bern claimed top spot of Group G in the Champions Hockey League but had to go to overtime to do it against the Cardiff Devils, while elsewhere in the group, Red Bull Salzburg's loss to the Växjö Lakers means Bern are the only team in the group with a perfect record after two games.
Despite a spirited start to the game from the Cardiff Devils, they didn't trouble SC Bern netminder Leonardo Genoni too much, with the Swiss goalie only having to stop 5 shots all period, and came up strong as Bern hit penalty trouble late in the opening frame. On the other end of the ice, Ben Bowns was equally as impressive, stopping 9 shots in a scoreless first period.
Starting the second period on the powerplay, the Devils struck early as Mark Richardson tucked the puck past Genoni with just 31 seconds gone in the second period, but the lead was short lived as Bern responded with a goal on the man advantage themselves less than a minute later, with Thomas Rüfenacht getting his second goal of the campaign.
The sides traded chances in the second period, with goals Calle Andersson of Bern and Mike Hedden of Cardiff, but after nothing could separate the two sides after 40 minutes of play, and they still couldn't be separated at the final buzzer, forcing overtime.
But it wasn't to be for the Cardiff Devils, as 50 seconds into overtime, Bern stole the extra point with a goal from Andrew Ebbett put Bern top of the group.
