- Pinguins Bremerhaven scored 3:19 into the match
- The Växjö Lakers were 1 for 3 on the powerplay
- Bremerhaven claims top spot in Group A
In a game to decide the top team in Group A, the Pinguins Bremerhaven played host to the Växjö Lakers for their second affair.
Bremerhaven would go up first, fast thanks to Jan Urbas's second of the campaign. With a little over three minutes gone, the Slovenian found himself in on a 2-on-1 where he opted to shoot the puck which whizzed past Janis Kalnins.
The away team upped their play and continued knocking at the door of their German hosts, but Maximilian Franzreb did a superb job of turning away all net threats.
Urbas's tally would stand as the only marker as a relatively quiet first period came to a close.
Both sides were saints in the first period, but that would not be the case to start the second. Glenn Gustafsson was called for tripping and the German club enjoyed the extra attacker for the first time on the night.
Coming into tonight, Växjö sported a perfect penalty-killing percentage and they would keep that streak going.
But Bremerhaven wouldn't need the extra attacker to hear the roar of the crowd as the home side's upset bid continued with Ross Mauermann serving up a second goal shortly after the special teams expired.
Not to be outdone, the Swedish side would make the most of their opportunity when it was their turn on powerplay six minutes in. Olle Lycksell launched a wicked one-timer that beat Franzreb, cutting Växjö's deficit in half.
In a second period that saw the home side come dangerously close to running away with the match, the visitors managed to correct their course, setting up an exciting third period in prospect with the score separated by a goal.
Approaching the halfway mark of the final frame, Växjö started to come alive setting up camp in their zone as they put the home team on their heels and kept them there.
For all their pressure, however, they couldn't create much as desperation started setting in for the away team with less than four minutes to go in this neck-and-neck contest.
Powerplays were awarded to each club in the closing minutes - Växjö first, then Bremerhaven a minute later - but the German side's defence, led by an almost unbeatable Maximilian Franzreb, would be the difference to lead Pinguins Bremerhaven past a competent Växjö squad 2-1 to claim the top spot in Group A in their first-ever CHL campaign.
