- Slovan Bratislava netminder Kristers Gudlevskis allows just one goal in 29 shots
Fribourg-Gottéron opened the game with a couple of solid chances against Slovan Bratislava's netminder, 29-year-old Latvian Kristers Gudlevskis. The Swiss contenders controlled the puck for most of the first period with Slovan not seeing many opportinities.
A roughing call by Fribourg forward Christopher DiDomenico gave Slovan their first powerplay of the game, but the Slokavian's struggled to set up in the zone, and couldn't generate many good quality scoring opporunities.
Fribourg netminder Connor Hughes had no problems scooping up shots from the perimeter, but he was tested when Slovan forward Jakub Urbánek deked the puck within close range. Tomáš Zigo took Slovan's first penalty of the evening after receiving a cross-checking call off a face-off with just three seconds to go in the first period.
With fresh legs and a man advantage to start the second period, Fribourg were well placed to do some damage, but the hosts pressured well, and managed to generate some shorthanded chances on Hughes. A second penalty by Slovan defenceman Martin Štajnoch gave Fribourg another chance, but Gudlevskis' glove and poke checks were brilliant.
Slovan had their second powerplay of the game thanks to high-sticking calls on Samuel Walser, but the advantage was cut short after Martin Štajnoch took his second for the night, a minor penalty for interference. At 33:59 21-year-old forward Sandro Schmid finally lit the lamp for Fribourg off a neat wrister from the high slot, making it 1-0 for the visitors. The Swiss side had a chance to extend their lead after Slovan's William Rapuzzi was handed a boarding call, but weren't able to capitalise.
The play was whistled down moments into the third period after Fribourg forward Nathan Marchon took an awkward hit on the boards. Fribourg netminder Connor Hughes took a 2 minute delay of game penalty giving Slovan a much needed opportunity, but their efforts went unrewarded.
Sovan threw everything at Fribourg, and both sides pushed relentlessly. A hooking call on Finnish forward Joona Jääskeläinen afforded the Swiss side another chance but Gudlevskis continued to jump on every loose puck.
With three minutes left on the clock the Slovakian side pulled the goalie in a final attempt to equalise, but a quick turnover saw NHL veteran David Desharnais sprint down and sink the puck into the open net. The 2-0 victory marks Fribourg's third win in regular time, while Slovan Bratislava are left disappointed despite one of their strong performances to date.
