- Färjestad end six-game Regular Season unbeaten, Storhamar drop out of CHL
Färjestad Karlstad have maintained a six-goal unbeaten run lasting the entirety of the Regular Season of the Champions Hockey League Playoffs after defeating Storhamar Hamar 3-0 in the last Regular Season game for both teams. Färjestad finishes with 17 of a possible 18 points. Storhamar had a chance to make the Playoffs, but their CHL season is now finished.
Knowing what was at stake, and cheered on by a strong contingent of travelling fans from Norway, Storhamar started the game strongly and had chances to open the scoring in the first period. They put on some pressure around the nine-minute mark and Maxime Lagacé made perhaps his best save of the game on a backhander from Cole Schneider in close.
But it was Färjestad who opened the scoring late in the period and it came off a lucky bounce. Jérémy Groleau’s shot deflected off a defensive stick and hit the end glass, then rebounded back over the crossbar and bounced off the back of goaltender Markus Røhnebæk Stensrud and into the net.
Färjestad took over the game in the second period and scored twice in under six minutes.
The 2-0 goal came just seconds after the expiration of the game’s first powerplay, but before the penalised player got back into the play. In the 29th minute, a pretty passing play finished with a pass from Michael Lindqvist to tee up a one-timer from Axel Bergkvist.
Marcus Westfält made it 3-0 at 33:52, converting a centring pass from Lucas Forsell.
Despite the desperate situation they were in entering the third period, Storhamar didn’t give up and threatened to get back into the game with a couple of solid powerplay attempts.
They scored on their first man advantage with 11:04 remaining in regulation time. Andreas Martinsen started the play and the puck was back on his stick a couple of passes later. Taking his time, he picked the top corner above Lagacé’s glove.
Exactly one minute after the goal, Storhamar went back to the powerplay and put on some good pressure, but were unable to break through.
After that, Färjestad were able to kill off the remaining time without any serious issue.
