Champions Hockey League heavyweights Frölunda Gothenburg put on an all-too-familiar performance against SaiPa Lappeenranta with a 6-1 win to kick-start their 2026/27 season.

A four-goal first period saw SaiPa score once and Frölunda net three of their own as the Swedes came out in dominant fashion. 

The Finns lit the lamp first on the powerplay when Patrik Siikanen scored from the slot just 2:45 into the contest. Siikanen positioned himself right between the hashmarks where he recieved a pass from Petrus Palmu, dusted the puck off and wristed it past Tobias Normann.

But then it was the hosts' turn to respond. Moments later, Max Westergård scored on a redirection after crashing the net, then Bosse Meijer made it 2-0 on the powerplay when he one-timed the puck stick-side from in close, and Samuel Fagemo capped off the first-period scoring with another one-timer, this time from the far dot that whizzed past the glove side.

Frölunda maintained their pace in the second, tacking on two more tallies - the first was from Nicklas Lasu who skated into a feed from Westergård from just inside the hash marks and wired it stick side. Then Linus Nässén made it a 5-1 game while the Swedes were short-handed when he casually glided in all alone before depositing the puck through the pads of Piiroinen.  

Finally, in the dying seconds of the final stanza, it was Jacob Peterson potting the hosts' sixth goal of the night on the powerplay when he pounced on a loose puck and shoveled it into the back of the net.
