- Fribourg scored nine goals
- Jan Dorthe completed a hattrick
- Seven goals were scored in the second period
Fribourg-Gottéron hosted reigning DEL champions Eisbären Berlin at the BCF Arena for Game Day 5 of the Champions Hockey League. Both teams had enjoyed solid seasons so far, but they knew a loss could threaten their chances of staying on the qualifying side of the leaderboard. However, only one team could walk away with the full three points and tonight they were well deserved.
The first period was dominated by the Swiss, as they controlled most of the play and scored three times. The scoring opened at 7:16 when a perfectly timed pass found Jan Dorthe who buried it in the back of the net. Just two minutes later, at 9:04, Dorthe added his second goal of the night, capitalising on a roughing penalty that gave his team an extra man on the ice. The third goal also came on the powerplay at 15:22 as Yannick Rathgeb sent the puck flying from the blueline giving Fribourg a comfortable 3-0 lead at the end of the period.
The second period turned into a goal frenzy with a total of seven goals scored, most of them by Fribourg. Although the Eisbären started the period on a high note by reducing the deficit to 3-1 just 18 seconds in, their performance soon fell apart. Fribourg responded with five more goals, one of which helped Jan Dorthe complete his hattrick. Eisbären managed to pull one back late in the period, but the scoreboard still read 8-2 in favour of Fribourg as the teams headed to the locker rooms.
The final period was calmer, with Fribourg easing up on their offensive pressure. Four minutes into the period, Eisbären scored their third goal of the night, but they still had a steep hill to climb, trailing by five. Santiago Näf finished off Fribourg's night with their ninth and final goal at 49:41, sealing an impressive 9-3 victory.
