- Cologne experience their first loss of the season
- Genève narrowly outshot the Germans 29-28
- Jesse Puljujärvi scored a hattrick
Jesse Puljujärvi netted the game-winning goal in OT to complete the hattrick as Genève-Servette handed Kölner Haie their first loss of the season in this 4-3 decision.
Excellent backchecking by the Swiss led to Matthew Verboon guiding one into the net off a cross-crease feed from Marco Miranda at 11:23. Miranda hounded a Cologne player from behind before gaining control of the puck and finding Verboon on the doorstep who gave his club the lead.
But in the dying seconds of the opening 20 minutes, a slip up at the blueline allowed the Germans to capitalise as Brady Austin finished off a passing play with a shot from the slot that beat Joren van Pottelberghe clean.
Cologne went on to take their first lead of the night just one minute and 29 seconds into the second frame when Daniel Fischbuch received a pass from just inside the near circle and fired it over the glove for his third of the campaign.
But with four ticks to go in the middle stanza, Puljujärvi got his club even with the Germans when he punched the puck into the back of the net on a 5-on-3 powerplay. Joshua Jooris found the Finn wide open in the slot, slid it tape-to-tape and let Puljujärvi do the rest.
The Swiss eventually regained the lead with a little more than five minutes left to play in regulation when Puljujärvi converted on a penalty shot. The 28-year-old glided down the middle before lifting it over the left shoulder of Nico Wiens to record his second of the night.
Moments later, however, Cologne responded when Maximilian Kammerer deflected a Fischbuch sauce pass past Pottelberghe to even the scoring.
Regulation ended with the sides still tied, but it didn't take long for the Swiss to take advantage of an opportunity in the extra session as just seven seconds in, it was Puljujärvi converting on his third to lift his club over the Germans and take their fourth victory of the season.
