- Joakim Lindström scores the winning penalty shot for 2+1 on the night
- SC Bern forward Jan Mursak was awarded a 5+20 penalty for elbowing
- Andrew Ebbett scores first goal of the match in the third minute of the third period to give Bern the lead
Skellefteå fought hard with SC Bern and were able to seal the deal in OT thanks to Joakim Lindström’s sole shootout goal.
Despite having to wait 40 minutes of playing time for the first goals of the match, Skellefteå and Bern put on a very good show from the get-go. Both Skellefteå and Bern were keen on getting the upperhand in the match, so both goalies had a lot of work on their hands. They were neck and neck and fought hard for every puck in an intense matchup. Despite all the effort, both teams left for the locker rooms still tied at 0-0. The second period started just where the first left off, and just 8 minutes of playing time later, Jan Mursak was sent to the bench for elbowing. His 5+20 penalty for elbowing meant the game was over for him. Skellefteå were not only unable to take advantage of the 5 minute powerplay, but cut it short with a high-sticking call for Jesper Frödé.
The first goal of the match was a powerplay shot by Andrew Ebbett at the start of the third period, that put Bern in front. The game noticeably calmed down from there on, as both teams focused more on scoring and were more disciplined (SC Bern didn’t have a single penalty minute in the third period). Skellefteå’s Oscar Möller tied the match, but in under a minute, Bern were back in the lead. With just 3 and a half minutes left on the clock, Joakim Lindström’s strike once again tied the game and sent the game to overtime.
Who else then star player Joakim Lindström scored the winning and only penalty goal in the OT shootout? His 2 goals and 1 assist really showed just what a quality player he is.
