- Merzlikins: second straight shutout vs JYP
- Lapierre: GWG for Lugano with 4:39 to play
- Lugano advances to Round of 16, JYP eliminated
Maxim Lapierre’s goal with 4:39 to play made the difference to earn HC Lugano a 1-0 victory over JYP Jyväskylä. That eliminates the defending European Champions on their home ice, despite a dominant performance. However, wave after wave of chances were denied by Lugano goalie Elvis Merzlikins, who shut out JYP for 120 minutes, following last week's 2-0 win at home.
The game was scoreless for two periods, although JYP dominated, outshooting Lugano 25-8. Their best chances to score came during a minute-long 5-on-3 advantage, but Merzlikins was stood tall.
Early in the third period, it appeared that Lugano had finally opened the scoring, but after a lengthy video review, it was determined that Julian Walker directed the airborne puck into the net with his leg.
Finally, with less than five minutes to play, Henrik Haapala, the Finn making his Lugano debut, backhanded the puck in front of the net and fed Lapierre, who went upstairs for the only shot to beat Eetu Laurikainen all game. JYP still had a chance on the powerplay after that and put on some more pressure, but just couldn’t find the net, bringing their reign as champions to an end.
