Mountfield HK and Kärpät Oulu played out their final Group F game in a tight and well-contested matchup in Hradec Králové.
The home side had an excellent start, going two goals ahead with a little over 10 minutes played. Matěj Chalupa starting tthings off at 7:43, while Michal Dragoun doubled that lead 10:08. Jani Hakanpää's blue-line rocket pulled one back for the Finns with 2:25 to go in the period as they group toppers trailed after 20 minutes.
Whatever was said in the Kärpät locker room in the period break had the desired effect, as a more determined side came out for the next session. They tied the game with 32:16 on the clock as Julius Hermonen got on the end of a long pass to finish fantastically top-shelf.
The hosts' best chance of the final 20 minutes came on a four-minute powerplay, but they were unable to convert. Then, with 8:48 to go, Mountfield retook the lead as Radovan Pavlík shot low to beat Jussi Rynnäs. It looked as if that would be the way things stayed, but Kärpät had other ideas with Otto Karvinen levelling with just over four minutes to go.
No goals in OT meant the game was decided in a shootout, which was won 3-2 by Kärpät in six rounds. Czech Radek Koblížek scored the winning goal for the Finnish side.
