- Lukko Rauma's special teams shine as they score four powerplay goals.
- Mannheim had not conceded a goal in the CHL for over 90 minutes.
- Arttu Ilomäki has quite the night scoring two powerplay goals and recording one assist.
At one point in the game, Lukko Rauma were in the same situation that saw them cough up a win and a vital point on Thursday night. But a new night and a new oppoenent in Adler Mannheim meant a new opportunity for the Finns to move ahead in their Group, and they did just that with the help of their special teams.
Save for an early Mannheim powerplay that saw 21-year-old Ruslan Iskhakov go toe-to-toe with Lukko's Samuel Jukuri, the first period didn't produce much in terms of offense from either side.
Things would heat up in the second, though, as Mannheim's penalty kill was tested often. Ultimately, it would be their undisciplined play that lead to undoing. With three penalties in quick succession, Mannheim saw themselves down two men midway through the second stanza. Markus Eisenschmid, Denis Reul, and Jordan Szwarz were all called for infractions as Lukko enjoyed extensive 5-on-3 time.
The first goal came 13:13 into the second period when Scott Pooley slid a pass to Thomas Grégoire who found Arttu Ilomäki in the circle. Ilomäki wasted no time in coralling the puck and fired it past Mannheim netminder Felix Brückmann to light the lamp for the first time on the night. Mannheim had gone over 90 minutes without letting one in, but that would be a different story tonight.
A minute later, it was a moment of déjà vu as the exact same situation happened again. With Lukko still on the 5-on-3, the puck again found Pooley who again found Grégoire who made a sweet feed to Ilomäki and the rest is history.
The period ended with a late flurry from Lukko, but the score would remain 2-0 heading into the final frame with Lukko leading in shots, 29 - 18.
The Finns were in familar territory heading into period three. Just two days prior, they were up 2-0 against Lausanne HC and as the puck dropped for period three it seemed history was deemed to repeat itself.
The Germans would go on the powerplay and cut Lukko's lead in half just 90 seconds into the final frame. Joonas Lehtivuori pounced on a bouncing puck and just like that Mannheim were back in the game.
The officials would review it for goaltender interference, but the tally would be upheld. All of a sudden, shades of Thursday's game came creeping back.
But minutes later Mannheim again would go to the box. This time repeat offender, Denis Reul, and Korbinian Holzer were sent to the sin bin and Lukko were up two men with a chance to increase their lead.
You didn't have to extend another invitation to Sebastian Repo who fired from point blanke past Brückmann to make it 3-1 in favor of the home club. And Lukko would continue to pull away on the powerplay. Vili Saarijärvi fired a long shot through layers of traffic as the puck found the back of the net extending Lukko's lead to three.
The Liiga champs didn't stop there as they stretched their lead even further with a rare even-strength tally from Linus Nyman at 47:20.
Mannheim would go on the powerplay midway through the period, but didn't have the same success with the man-advantage as they would drop this one by an almost identical margin to their Thursday win.
