- Historic first Semi-Final for Munich & the DEL
- Parkes completes hat-trick with OT-winner
- Both teams had led and came back during regulation time
Red Bull Munich's historic run in this season's Champions Hockey League will continue into the Semi-Finals after an enthralling game followed by an aggregate-winning goal in overtime over the Malmö Redhawks at Malmö Arena.
After an opening two minutes in which the Redhawks were pinned in their own zone, Malmö took the lead with their first shot on target on the game through Emil Slyvegård in the slot. That goal drew them level on aggregate, and they were to then go ahead overall at 11:38 as a shot deflected in off a Munich player, credited to Johan Olofsson. However, before the first period was done, the Red Bulls were back level overall as John Parkes throw to the net hit both goalie pads of Oscar Alsenfelt and crept into the net.
Just 1:17 into the second session, Parkes struck again to put Munich ahead on aggregate again, and then Justin Shugg added to the lead just over three minutes later. However, this time it would be Malmö with a comeback - Olofsson hit his Olofsson second just shy of the 35 minute mark, followed by Jens Olsson scoring at 38:40 to make it 4-3 on the night to the Redhawks and level overall. It looked to be staying that way into the period break, but Daryl Boyle had other ideas as he rocketed a shot into the top corner with 17 seconds left in the period to put Munich ahead on aggregate again.
To say the third period was a nervy affair would be an understatement, but the home side eventually got level in the series with a wonderful effort from Fredrik Storm to tie the aggregate score with 6:44 to go. The Red Bulls had a golden chance to win the game at the end of regulation but Andrew Bodnarchuk could do no better than the goalie's chest and the game went to overtime.
If the third period was nervy, overtime was intense. There were chances at each end before the puck broke kindly to Parkes, who completed his hat-trick at 64:02 with the series winner to put Munich into the Semi-Finals. For the record, the game finished 5-5, seeing the Red Bulls go through 7-6 on aggregate.
