- Genève outshot Bremerhaven 67-46
- Genève were ahead for two periods
- Bremerhaven went from losing to winning in less than 1:30 minutes
Pinguins Bremerhaven hosted reigning CHL Champions Genève-Servette in northern Germany for their opening game of the Champions Hockey League season. After a hard-fought contest which lasted right down to the final seconds of the game, Bremerhaven emerged victorious, claiming a 3-2 win and earning a solid three points.
The action began quickly, with Genève’s Tanner Richard opening the scoring just 1:45 minutes after the opening face-off. The Swiss side struck again soon after, as Simon Le Coultre fired a blistering slapshot from a face-off to extend the lead to 2-0. Bremerhaven thought they had pulled one back on a powerplay following a hooking penalty, but their goal was ruled offside. Nevertheless, the Germans kept up the pressure and eventually found the back of the net with six minutes remaining in the first period, closing the gap to 2-1.
The second period brought a goal draught, though it wasn't for lack of chances. Genève maintained control for much of the period but couldn’t convert their opportunities. Bremerhaven also tested the Swiss defence, but many of their shots missed the mark. Despite the intense back-and-forth action, the scoreboard remained unchanged heading into the final period.
In the third period, Bremerhaven made a massive comeback. Just 30 seconds after the face-off, Matthew Abt fired a shot from the blue line that found its way into the net to tie the game. Shortly after, the home crowd erupted again as Bremerhaven scored yet another, taking the lead for the first time of the night.
With over 18 minutes left, Genève pushed hard to equalise, but Bremerhaven’s netminder Maximilian Franzreb didn’t break and denied every attempt. As the final buzzer sounded, the arena went wild as Bremerhaven had secured a 3-2 comeback victory and start their return to the Champions Hockey League with a solid three points.
