- Salzburg back to winning ways with another win over Cardiff
- Cardiff still bottom of Group G with third straight loss
- John Hughes adds to his point totals with two assists for Salzburg
Just a week after the two sides met in Cardiff, Red Bull Salzburg returned home to play host to the Cardiff Devils in their third game in Group G of this year's Champions Hockey League.
A great first period for Salzburg was enough to seal the victory last time these two sides met, and once again Salzburg turned to Lukas Herzog who put in another fantastic performance in his first year with the team. Cardiff are on the first of their two straight away games, and with a large number of travelling fans making the trip to cheer them on, they'll be hoping at some point to add to the point they earned from SC Bern last Saturday.
Again it was a great first period from Salzburg, with goals from Mario Huber and Chris VandeVelde giving them a 2-0 lead at the end of the second period, and then by the midway point of the middle period, Salzburg had doubled their lead through a backdoor tap-in from Brant Harris and a fierce one-timer from Raphael Herburger.
The Devils weren't out of it just yet despite the four-goal deficit, as Top Scorer Mike Hedden continued his fine form for the side, jumping on a loose puck on a rare lapse from Herzog in the Salzburg net, as he lost sight of the puck.
In the final frame, another reliable source for the Devils got on the scoreboard as Layne Ulmer showed off his hand eye ability with a great tip in front, leaving Herzog with very little to do but watch the puck trickle past him. But it was too little, too late for the Devils as Salzburg skated away with another win over them, keeping their hopes of qualifying for the knockout rounds alive in a very competetive Group G.
