- Sparta added an empty-netter one second before the final buzzer
- Fehérvár led twice
- Fehérvár only played one powerplay
Sparta Prague hosted Hungarians Fehérvár AV19 in the Czech capital for Game Day 2 of the 2024/25 season of the Champions Hockey League. After both teams struggled in their season openers, they were eager to bounce back and secure three points.
The first period brought a surprise, not just for the fans but also for Sparta, who seemed to underestimate Fehérvár's strength from the get-go. The Hungarians dominated the opening 20 minutes in terms of scoring chances and were rewarded with a goal from Anže Kuralt who capitalised on a loose puck in front of Josef Kořenář and tapped it in for a well-deserved lead.
Sparta improved their performance in the second period but struggled to find the back of the net. They managed to equalise, thanks to Kryštof Hrabík who tipped in Jakub Krejčík’s shot from the blue line. However, Fehérvár quickly regained their one-goal advantage as Anže Kuralt deked around Kořenář and netted his second goal of the game.
The Czechs began the final period with a quick goal to tie the game during a two-minute five-on-three powerplay following a holding penalty and an unsportsmanlike conduct call during the opening face-off. Just a minute later, they added another goal, putting them in the driver’s seat of the game for the first time of the evening.
Sparta held their lead firmly and eventually secured the win with two empty-net goals, finishing the game 5-2. This marked Sparta's first victory of the season, while Fehérvár added yet another loss to their record.
