The Växjö Lakers engineered their third regulation win in four starts, defeating Storhamar Hamar to the tune of 4-1 to claim 10 out of a possible 12 points through the first games of the 2024/25 Champions Hockey League campaign.
First-period play was dominated by the Swedish side who had the only tally of the period, a short-handed goal, that came as a result of a clearing attempt made by Elias Rosén that caught Storhamar netminder Markus Røhnebæk Stensrud by surprise and somehow found its way into the hosts' net to give Växjö the lead at 9:07.
Shots were 11-5 in favour of the visitors following the first 20 minutes with both clubs going on the man-advantage twice.
The Swedes continued to hem the hosts in their zone for long stretches to start the second, but it was Storhamar getting on the board with a rebound goal from Austin Cangelosi. Jacob Berglund made the initial shot which bounced off of Adam Åhman's pads and right to Cangelosi who was parked at the top of the crease to put it home.
Late in the period, Storhamar's Samuel Solem was called for delaying the game. This would put Växjö back on the powerplay where, with six seconds to go, a Joachim Blichfeld one-timer gave the lead back to the Swedes. Joel Persson made a diagonal pass from the point that Blichfeld got all of to make it 2-1 heading into the third.
The visitors gave themselves some insurance at 49:16. Victor Stjernborg took a pass from Elias Rosén, threaded the needle past the intended shot blocker and shot one down low, just inside the post to add to the hosts' deficit.
Storhamar were dealt another blow moments later when Andreas Martinsen was called for a five-minute major.
The ensuing powerplay would be a back-breaker for the Norwegians as Växjö added another tally to their total. Blichfeld cleaned up a rebound after Stensrud fought off Félix Robert's initial shot to make it 4-1 with a little less than five minutes to go.
The home side would go on the powerplay in the dying seconds of the period attempting to close the goal difference, but Växjö never gave an inch, as this one wrapped up in favour of the Swedish side with Storhamar's two-game point streak coming to an end.
