- Straubing found success in all situations
- Missed opportunities plagued SønderjyskE
- The Germans outshot their opponents 37 - 21
The Straubing Tigers engineered a shutout against SønderjyskE Vojens, defeating the Danish side 3-0 in front of their home crowd at Eisstadion am Pulverturm. The Germans' powerplay struck twice and Zane McIntyre stopped 21 of 21 en route to the win.
Straubing got on the board early via a powerplay goal. Joshua Samanski found the back of the net on the powerplay as he beat Mattias Pettersson with a clean wrister over the glove to give his club the 1-0 lead. Justin Braun slid it from the point to Samanski who dusted it off before firing it from the top of the far circle for his first-ever CHL tally.
The score would go unchanged for the rest of the period as both sides traded chances with shot totals favouring the hosts 12-7.
Second-period action got underway with play much the same of the first as both sides played north/south hockey and both netminders denying everything that came their way.
Midway through the middle frame, however, it would be the hosts lighting the lamp again. This time it was Cole Fonstad tipping home a goal to put his club up by two. The play started from the point where the Germans gained control of the puck before skating into the zone where Philip Samuelsson let go a shot-pass that found Fonstad's stick and sailed into the back of the net.
SønderjyskE had another chance to cut into the lead when they went on their first powerplay late in the second, but missed opportunities continued to be their story as they failed to convert on the man-advantage and headed into the third still down by a pair of goals.
The Danes' two-goal deficit would soon become three, however, when Marcel Brandt secured Straubing's third goal and second powerplay tally of the game five minutes into the third. Taylor Leier received a cross-ice feed before skating down low and then sliding it back to Brandt who was wide open at the top of the left circle as he slapped it top shelf to extend his team's lead.
Near the midway mark of the period, the visitors continued to pressure McIntyre, but the netminder stood tall, stopping several chances in close including a partial breakaway.
This would be the case for the remainder of the contest as SønderjyskE were unable to cash in on any of their opportunities, including a flurry of chances with one a half minutes to go, leading to their first loss of the season, while Straubing gave their fans something to celebrate with their first points of the tournament.
