- Tappara regain their scoring form
- Rouen's defensive deficiencies continue
- Shots were 33-14 in favour of Tappara
Tappara Tampere claimed their first three-point win of the campaign, defeating the Rouen Dragons 6-1 on home ice. The Finnish side scored once in the first, twice in the second, and three in the third to take the regulation victory.
The hosts never let up the pressure in the opening frame and their persistence paid off when Arttu Kärki deflected one past Oskari Setänen to open the scoring. Joni Tuulola steered the puck towards the net where Kärki was able to get his stick on it to make it 1-0.
Play continued in much the same way as Setänen stayed the busier of the two netminders through the first 20 minutes, with Tappara firing 11 shots on the Rouen netminder while the visitors managed six shots of their own.
The second period got underway with teams trading powerplay opportunities, but neither were able to break through.
Then, midway through the period, Tappara found themselves on the powerplay for a fourth time when Kristian Tanus corralled the puck inside the near circle and wired a perfect shot short side to extend his club's lead. The Finns would go on to make it 3-0 when Oskari Luoto put home a bouncing puck. A shot from the point pinballed around inside the crease before Luoto deftly whacked it home.
Moments later, Rouen were able to cut into the lead when Jared Dmytriw secured his second of the tournament when he got his own rebound on a brilliant individual effort. The 26-year-old skated the puck through the neutral zone and powered his way to the net where his initial shot went off the pad of Juha Metsola and onto the stick of Dmytriw as he slid it home.
In the third, Rouen's two-goal deficit would become a three-goal deficit as Kärki registered his second of the game at 41:39. A slick shot from the far circle made its way past Setänen's glove side to regain the Finns' comfortable margin over the French.
Then, with less than a minute and half to go, Tappara would go on to seal their victory with two tallies in quick succession. The first off the stick of Juuso Nykänen who jammed the puck home for his first on the year, and then Oiva Keskinen made it 6-1 when he lifted the puck past the Rouen netminder.
