- Stránský & Vrána: 2 points each, combined on OT goal
- Joel Genazzi: goal for Lausanne
- Lausanne hold 1-point lead heading into next week
Matěj Stránský deflected a backhand shot by Petr Vrána in overtime to lift Oceláři Třinec to a 2-1 overtime win over Lausanne HC in a big game between two teams fighting to advance from an insanely tight Group D.
After killing off an early penalty, Třinec were able to build momentum on a four-minute penalty for kneeing to Max Wärn and an additional minor to Lukas Frick. On the 5-on-3, Erik Hrňa glided in from the point and stepped into a one-time slapper that beat Tobias Stephan over the glove to open the scoring at 6:48.
In the second period, Lausanne pushed back but Petr Kváča was in top form, making a couple of big saves off Christoph Bertschy, including a breakaway. In the 34th minute, though, the visitors finally broke through, as Joel Genazzi’s long shot through a crowd hit Kváča‘s glove and went in.
Early in the third period, Yannick Herrin was assessed a penalty shot but was stopped by Kváča, who also denied Cody Almond a couple of times. Then it was Třinec‘s turn, but Aron Chmielewski fired a shot off the crossbar with just over seven minutes to play.
On a power play late in the third period, Třinec put on enormous pressure but just couldn't pull out the regulation win, with Stephan coming up big on several occasions. The power play continued into overtime, and with the teams skating 4-on-4 after its expiry, Třinec continued to press. Vrána went to work, shielding the puck before firing it to the net for Stránský's tip.
The two teams go at it again next week in Switzerland, with Lausanne holding a one-point lead and both teams still capable of finishing anywhere from first to third in the group.
