- Rögle's Samuel Jonsson scores late to secure win
- Zurich managed to come from behind twice
- The Swedish side went 3-4 on the powerplay
Samuel Jonsson scored with 32 seconds remaing to help Rögle Ängelholm take the road leg of their series against ZSC Lions Zurich as the visitors topped the Swiss 4-3.
A spectacular save by Rögle's Calle Clang at the midway mark of the first period kept the hosts in it against a surging Zurich as the two met in Switzerland to begin their Round of 16.
The opening stanza was a mostly disciplined affair until late in the period when Zurich’s Justin Azevedo was found guilty of slashing, allowing the Swedes' powerplay to go to work.
Excellent puck possession gave the visitors what they needed as Adam Tambellin had no trouble cashing in on the one-timer on the man-advantage. The goal would initially be reviewed for goaltender interference, but eventually stood and with it the visitors were on the board with 2:26 to go.
Less than a minute after conceding, however, Zurich responded with a deflection that found its way to 22-year-old Justin Sigrist who made no mistake in chipping it over Clang’s shoulder to even things out.
After 20 minutes of play, Rögle and Zurich remained tied as they got set for second period action.
Midway through the second stanza, Zurich would take their first lead of the night thanks to a beautiful backhand tuck by Denis Hollenstein. The Swiss forward made a move in close as he skated through the crease where he deposited the shot through the wickets of a sprawling Clang, and with that the visitors were in unfamiliar territory as they chased the lead.
Not for long, however, as Rögle roared back with two quick goals on the powerplay late in the second.
Dennis Everberg struck first when he was set up by Tambellini who fed the puck through traffic. Tambellini then tucked his second of the night in a little over three mintues later. The Canadian was perfectly positioned in the right faceoff dot where he wired a one-timer past Lukas Flüeler to give the hosts their second lead of the night at 3-2 with 40 minutes gone.
Tempers continued to flare in the third, and with just four minutes gone a questionable hit from Zurich's John Quenneville almost handed Rogle their fifth powerplay. But upon review, the play was deemed legal and the game continued.
Not two minutes, later, however, the hosts found themselves on a powerplay of their own with a chance to tie. Zurich did well to maintain pressure on the man-advantage, but for everything they did right, the Swiss couldn't convert and were left chasing the lead with 12 minutes to go in regulation.
Man-advantage or no man-advantage, Zurich would not go quietly into this good night as they tied it up at 10:33 in the third when Patrick Geering and Denis Malgin found themselves in on a 2-on-1 down low. Malgin quickly snapped a pass to Geering who guided the puck into the back of the net to level the contest at three.
Both sides exchanged pleasantries with the puck in the closing minutes of the match-up, but it was the team from Ängelholm that had the last say as Jonsson made his mark when he scored his first of the night, and first of the tournament, in the dying seconds of the third to give his team the hard-fought victory.
