- Close contest between Munich and Zug in Group D action
- Late mistake gifts Jan Kovar an empty net to seal victory for Zug
- Zug move into qualification spot with one game remaining
Three teams are still in playoff contention in Group D, and while Red Bull Munich hosted EV Zug on game day five, both sides would hope to get even closer to progessing to the next round of this year's Champions Hockey League.
Zug entered the day in third place in the group, on the outside looking in on the playoff spots, but Anton Lander got the visitors from Switzerland off to a dream start in Munich, redirecting a shot at the back door just 23 seconds in to give Zug an early lead. The early strike proved to be the only difference on the scoreboard through the opening 20 minutes of action.
The hunt for the next goal went on in the second period, with neither side either to capitlise early.
Eventually, however, it was the hosts who were celebrating after a great line rush up ice. Yannic Seidenberg and Ben Street linked up with a nice drop pass that was then sent towards the slot as Frederik Tiffels made a drive to the net, and got his stick out to deflect the puck past Leonardo Genoni to tie the game.
It took a powerplay for the next goal to come. Danny aus den Birken made a huge stop to deny a shorthanded chance for Zug at one end, and then Munich took the puck all the way down the ice. As Zach Redmond was alone in front, Genoni made a great effort with the stick to poke it away, but it fell right to Trevor Parkes who buried the second effort to give Munich a 2-1 lead late in the second period.
The lead was shortlived, however, as Zug equalised shortly later when they moved the puck around the zone. Samuel Kreis put the puck towards net, and after an initial stop by aus den Birken, he couldn't deny the reach of Fabrice Herzog who slid the puck past the outstretched leg of the Munich goalie to send the game into the third period tied at two apiece.
Tiffels was on hand again in the third to turn the puck into the net, scoring early on as once again his drive to the net put him in position to get his stick on the puck to deflect it goalwards after a quick feed across by Parkes.
Not dettered by falling behind, Zug pressed on in search of an equaliser. Dario Simion received a pass on the left wing and danced around the defenceman before firing his shot over the glove side, making it three each with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
Munich survived a late penalty kill after some heroics by aus den Birken, but with 26 seconds left, a mistake gifted Zug the chance they needed to take the lead. The shot was stopped by aus den Birken and as he looked to play the puck to keep the play moving, both he and Ben Street missed the puck, leaving the puck to find it's way out front to Jan Kovar who had an empty net.
That would seal a 4-3 victory in bizare fashion for Zug, putting them into the top spot of Group D pending the outcome of Rögle Ängelholm's visit to Denmark to take on the SønderjyskE Vojens.
